Auto Insurance Tips: Get UM/UIM Coverage

by | May 5, 2024 | Firm News

Hello, this is attorney Hunter Cavell in Cleveland, Ohio, and today I want to talk to you about car insurance. As you may or may not be aware, in Ohio there are state laws that require you to carry liability insurance, but the limits are actually very low of only $25,000. This means if you get into a car accident through nofault of your own and the other driver has minimum coverage or no coverage, you may not be able to be made whole. In Ohio, you are offered something called UM/UIM insurance. And what that means is whatever your policy is for, if the other driver doesn’t have it, they’ll bring it up. So if you have a policy for $100,000 and somebody hits you who’s uninsured, you can have your own insurance coverage cover it for $100,000. This is very important not to overlook. It’s not that much money and it should be added. Another thing you need to be aware of is something called medpay. Again, if you get into an accident, you might be taken to the hospital. Ambulance rides aren’t cheap, and a lot of times they want money quickly before a lawsuit settles. Therefore, if you have medpay a typical amount of $5,000, your insurance company will front the money that’s needed to go to the emergency room and to make sure you get all your medical treatment, because it’s very important to do any and all medical treatment, not only for yourself, but for your entire case as it progresses.
